As we enter the final week of the City Tournament, several things have been made clear. First, there have been some great games played thus far. Second, by looking at the bracket, the best matchups might be yet to come. And third, everyone has had a great time so far.
While we were leery at first about asking coaches to evaluate the umpires (especially after one coach might have ended their season), nearly every evaluation has had positive feedback of our officiating crew. In fact, nearly a dozen coaches have said they had the best umpires all season in the tournament and while not everyone was completely happy, those that haven't been have offered constructive feedback (for the most part) which will help the crew get better throughout the post season and next year.
Looking to the brackets, there still are many exciting games yet to be played and we've had several nailbiters already.
In the Major-70 bracket, Pepsi-Cola is the only KA team left in the championship bracket. Pepsi, which only dropped one game during the regular season, eeked out a win against a tough Overturf team to advance to face KPMA in the quarterfinals. KPMA has been consistent thus far in scoring with seven runs in each of its first two games. KN's Sullivan Rowell and Apollo will meet in the other quarterfinal matchup. KA dominates the consolation bracket with 5 teams still alive compared to KN's three. Needless to say, its still anyone's guess who will be playing on Saturday morning.
In the Major-60/Minor A bracket, KA squares off against KA and KN faces KN on Tuesday in games that will determine who will advances to the semifinals. DQ Grill & Chill and Tri-Cities Battery easily won their Saturday games, but both want the semfinal berth. And in the other quarterfinal game, the Cougars will face the #1 KN seed Atomic Printing for the right to face a KA team in the semifinals.
The Minor/Minor-B bracket has a strong Yoke's Fresh Market team facing a strong Three Rivers Physical Therapy team for the right to remain in the championship bracket. Wednesday night might prove to be the toughest test for each team so far this season and I'm sure the fences will be lined with people to watch what probably will be the best game of the evening.
It's been a great tournament so far, and this week should prove to be full of great matchups from teams who badly want to hoist the trophy on Saturday.
